SAS partnered with the Center for Urban Pedagogy and designer James Dunphy to create SERVE! Street Safety for Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Youth.
This pocket-sized Know Your Rights guide for New York City breaks down changes to the NYPD’s Patrol Guide on the treatment of transgender New Yorkers, which SAS played a leadership role in securing in 2012.
These changes are designed to reduce some of the abuses faced by trans and gender non-conforming individuals during police interactions, such as searches to assign gender based on anatomy and failure to respect gender identity during police interactions, arrest processing, and detention in police custody. This resource is specific to New York City laws. Find resources for other cities here.
